Matthew Nottingham, MD
Dr. Matthew Nottingham is a graduate of VCU School of Medicine and has been practicing medicine for nine years. His background is rooted in emergency medicine — and it was there, in the fast-moving environment of the ER, that the vision for New Kent Direct Care began to take shape.
As an ER physician, Dr. Nottingham watched patients express the same frustration time and again — their primary care provider simply didn't have enough time to address all of their concerns. He also saw the consequences of fragmented care firsthand: the disconnect between hospital care, specialist care, and primary care that left patients confused, and at times, worse off. He knew there was a better way.
At NKDC, his goal is to create a practice where primary care providers serve as a true medical quarterback — someone who knows you, coordinates your care across an otherwise disjointed medical landscape, and ensures nothing falls through the cracks. As Medical Director, he is committed to building a practice where trust and communication aren't just values on a wall, but the foundation of every patient relationship.
His approach is straightforward — he takes the time to truly understand your concerns before anything else. When your expectations are clear and your provider is listening, the two of you can build a plan you both believe in, with clear goals and a path forward you actually understand.
A native of Norfolk with family roots in Virginia spanning centuries, Dr. Nottingham has called New Kent home for the past five years, where he lives with his wife on a farm in Barhamsville. When he's not seeing patients, you'll find him helping with the horses, fixing fences, working on vehicles, and finding genuine satisfaction in the simple joys of country living.
One thing patients should know before their first visit — he's very much an ER doc at heart. Transparent, direct, and refreshingly honest. If something is bothering you, bring it up. There's nothing too small, nothing to be embarrassed about. If it matters to you, it matters to him.
Medical Director & Physician
John Goddard, MD
Dr. John Goddard is a board-certified family physician with more than two decades of experience across family medicine, occupational medicine, urgent care, and aviation medicine. A native Virginian, he earned both his undergraduate degree and his medical degree from the University of Virginia before completing his family medicine residency at Riverside Family Practice in Newport News.
His path through medicine has been anything but ordinary. Dr. Goddard served on active duty in the United States Air Force from 2000 to 2004, practicing family medicine at Barksdale Air Force Base and serving as flight surgeon for the 96th Bomb Squadron — the Red Devils. He went on to continue his service in the Air Force Reserve as a flight medicine physician, and his career since has spanned occupational medicine, aviation medicine, allergy immunotherapy, DOT medical examinations, and expeditionary medical support.
Throughout all of it, one belief has remained constant: good medicine begins with a strong relationship between a patient and their doctor. Dr. Goddard has followed the growth of the direct care movement for more than two decades, and joining New Kent Direct Care represents a return to what drew him to medicine in the first place — a doctor who knows his patients, a patient who knows their doctor, and a relationship built on trust, continuity, and time.
His interest in keeping people healthy — not simply treating illness after it occurs — runs through everything he does. Whether through preventive care, wellness, or helping patients return safely to work and normal activities, his focus has always been on the whole person, not just the problem in front of him.
A Virginian with family roots in the Commonwealth stretching back generations, Dr. Goddard has a deep love for Virginia's history and heritage — particularly the preservation of historic battlefields, churches, and cemeteries. He has researched extensively the Battle of Eltham's Landing, fought right here in New Kent County in May 1862. Outside of medicine and history, he has been active in the performing arts, choral music, and his local church — and has plans to learn the bagpipes. Patients are encouraged to ask him how that's going.

Kelsey Carr, FNP
Family Nurse Practitioner
Kelsey earned her undergraduate degree from Virginia Tech — go Hokies! — and went on to complete her Family Nurse Practitioner certification through Maryville University in St. Louis, Missouri, all while working full-time as a nurse at VCU Hospital. She has spent the past six years practicing as an FNP in urgent care, and has also dedicated over a year to pediatric psychiatric care — bringing a depth and range of experience that informs everything she does.
Kelsey comes to New Kent Direct Care because she believes healthcare should never be one-size-fits-all. Urgent care and primary care often overlap, but the fast-paced environment can make it hard to slow down and truly connect with patients. Direct care changes that — and that's exactly what drew her here.
Her approach is simple: healthcare is a collaboration. She wants you to feel comfortable, heard, and genuinely involved in your own care. No rushed visits, no cookie-cutter answers — just a provider who takes the time to understand what works best for you.
Outside of the office you'll find Kelsey outdoors, traveling, or tracking down really good food with her family and friends. Fair warning — she spends an embarrassing amount of time with a lint roller, so don't be surprised if she's just as excited to meet your furry family members as she is to meet you.

With 10+ years of office level management in a multispecialty group, I've spent my career side by side with patients and providers — problem solving, removing obstacles, and making sure the experience on both sides of the exam room door is the best it can be. I know what good care looks like, and more importantly, what it feels like.
My focus at NKDC is entirely on the member experience — making sure you feel heard, taken care of, and never left trying to figure things out alone. I'm on-site every day and I'll be one of the most familiar faces you see. Whether you have a question about your membership, need help navigating a referral, or aren't sure where to start — I'm your first call and your go-to resource.
